Brooklyn, West

Map of Alameda, Oakland and Brooklyn, 1859

Brooklyn, Calif - One of the many towns that were incorporated in to city of Oakland. Brooklyn was annexed by the city in 1909. Brooklyn was separated from Oakland by a tidal estuary that would later become Lake Merritt. It was noted for it’s rural country side, warm weather and it’s vacation hotels and spas such as the Hiram Tubbs Hotel.  A perfect get-away for the well to do San Franciscan. It was considered a suburban community until the railroads developed the land around the estuary to be areas of production in the 1900′s.
